W.D. (Rip) Hewes

WERipHewes W.E. “Rip” Hewes was born in Lowell, Arizona. After graduating from high school in Wayne, Oklahoma, he attended Arkansas Tech and the University of Alabama. He played at Alabama and was roommate with the legendary Paul “bear” Bryant. Hewes accepted a teaching/coaching position at Fort Deposit, Alabama in 1933. He moved to Dothan in 1936 as science teacher and football coach at Dothan High School. The 1937 Dothan High Tigers had a 9-0 season. He continued to coach the “Tigers” for 12 very successful years, except for a three-year tour of duty in the Navy. He served as the city of Dothan’s Recreation Director from 1950-1966. He was a charter member and organizer of the Dixie Youth Baseball Program. Coach Hewes was recognized for his contributions to his community with the naming of a softball field and, in 1964, the new football stadium was named “Rip” Hewes Football Stadium. He is deceased.
